Formula Blending, Ball Milling and tableting of a Silver Electrode Tablet

The project highlighted here was part of a heart monitoring system developed by NASA, and designed to be worn by astronauts in the US manned space flight program. The 94% silver electrode tablet required for this project utilized a matrix which functioned as the sensor. As a leader in providing specialized services, our capabilities and processes at TAB-PRO LLC were an ideal fit for this project. We utilized three in-house applications: formula blending, ball milling, and tableting to complete the silver electrode tablet.

This project required the use of our Colton 341 tablet press which was set with 0.615: 440SS tooling. In addition we utilized our ball mill, Waring blender and bottle tumbler blenders. The tablet was composed of silver powder and silver chloride. The overall dimensions of the silver electrode tablet were .615" in diameter with a height of .020" and weight of .8 grams. It was also required to meet a height tolerance of -0.0"/+.005". Specification integrity was verified by the press operator who checked the electrode height, weight, and for the absence of lamination. This was performed every minute at start-up and every 5 minutes thereafter. We manufactured 12,000 units per order with a turnaround time of just 2 days. All customer specifications were complied with, including the NASA Electrode System Standards and Engelhard P-400 99.99% pure silver standard.
