Development & Manufacturing of a Boric Acid Disc for a High Voltage Electrical Application

Tableting Pro is a trusted leader in the manufacture of specialized tablets for various industries and applications. Our latest project involved the development of a 95% boric acid disc, specifically designed to act as a spark arrestor in 10 kilovolt electrical switches. This was a significant upgrade for our customer, whose existing switch housing was being damaged/melted by the arc created when the switch was activated. The boric acid disc served to mitigate this issue, by absorbing the arc and protecting the housing. The disc is also easy to replace due to its drilled out offset depression.

Our skilled team utilized a range of advanced manufacturing processes to create this specialized tablet, including wet granulation, drying, milling, tableting, heating, and precision drilling. The project required the use of various sophisticated manufacturing systems, including our 5-gallon pony mixer, Colton wet granulator, Stokes 31A oven, Fitzmill D6, Stokes R-Press, and Gehnrich oven. The manufacturing process involved dispersing the friendly plastic with solvent on boric acid granules, heating, and fusing the tablet as a mesh matrix, which holds the disc together. The completed spark arrestor tablet was 1.94" in diameter, with a .44" drilled offset depression, and a height of .115". The tablet weighed 6.8 grams and was manufactured with a tolerance of ±.005".

At Tableting Pro, we adhere to strict quality control standards, measuring height, weight, and hardness every minute at start-up and every 5 minutes thereafter. This project represents a production run of 10,000 tablets, completed in just 2 days.
